1. Typhoon Fung-wong Hits Eastern Taiwan, Ministry of Agriculture Launches Disaster Relief
Typhoon Fung-wong, enhanced by the northeast monsoon, caused heavy rainfall and significant agricultural damage in eastern Taiwan. On November 14, the Ministry of Agriculture announced relief measures for Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung counties, streamlining procedures to quickly disburse funds and support farmers in resuming cultivation and livestock care. As of November 14, total agricultural losses reached NT$121.42 million, with Hualien accounting for NT$106.81 million, or 88% of the total. Relief includes 14 crop types and all poultry in Yilan, all agricultural products in affected Hualien townships, and buckwheat in Taitung. The Ministry will continue inspections and coordinate with local authorities to extend assistance to crops affected later or not yet listed, ensuring timely support for all affected farmers.
2. Taiwan Strengthens ASF Prevention One Week After Ban Lift
One week after lifting the African Swine Fever (ASF) ban, Taiwan’s pork markets and slaughterhouses have resumed operations. The Ministry of Agriculture continues strict measures, including testing dead pigs, monitoring rendering plants, and enforcing biosecurity standards. Future food-waste reuse will require properly scaled steam-cooking equipment with real-time monitoring, alongside local government approval. Authorities stress ongoing efforts at borders, domestic inspections, and public guidance to prevent ASF spread and protect the swine industry.
