Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fishing Season Begins with New Conservation and Management Measures
Pacific Bluefin tuna, commonly known in Taiwan as "Hei Weng Chuan," is an important marine catch for Taiwan’s economy. According to the Fisheries Agency, Pacific Bluefin tuna is under close scrutiny by international fisheries management organizations. To fulfill its obligations as a member of such organizations, Taiwan has implemented revised operational management regulations this year. These include the use of tagging to control the allocated quota of 2,200 metric tons. Depending on the tonnage class of the fishing vessels, limits have been set on the number of tags allowed per voyage. A three-phase control system will be activated as quota usage reaches approximately 70% and 85%, ensuring maximum utilization of the allocation. The tags also serve as identification cards for the tuna, guaranteeing that catches are traceable and legally caught.
